Big Sam's Funky Nation: Hailing from New Orleans as the former trombone player of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Big Sam always entertains audiences with his exhilarating brand of high-voltage funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop, termed “Noladelic Powerfunk.” The San Francisco Chronicle asserts “[Big Sam is] the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.” Accompanying Big Sam are Andrew Baham on Trumpet/Vocals, Andrew Block on Guitar, Chocolate MILK on Drums and Eric Vogel on Bass. Together, BIG SAM’S FUNKY NATION engages and delights audiences across the country with their high energy performance and showmanship. Big Sam’s Funky Nation has wowed crowds at major festivals and events, including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Gathering of the Vibes, SXSW, Jam Cruise and countless others. According to the Associated Press, “Big Sam’s Funky Nation, one of New Orleans’ most energetic brass bands, had a crowd of thousands on its feet at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.” BSFN has also been featured on "LIVE! with Regis & Kelly," and more recently, in HBO's original series, "Treme," where the band performs one of their songs for a Mardi Gras event, and Big Sam plays himself in multiple episodes, including scenes with Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint as they recorded the acclaimed Grammy-nominated album, River in Reverse. Though the band is continuously on the road, playing major music festivals and venues nationwide and abroad, BIG SAM’S FUNKY NATION is also available for private engagements such as weddings, campus events, and corporate functions. A Big Sam show is one not to be missed, and one that your audience will talk about for ages to come.
The Gumbo Brothers: Over the last nine years,The Gumbo Brothers have firmly rooted themselves in the eclectic artistic tradition of Venice Beach, California with weekly performances at various local venues and parties. Since 2003, they have been entertaining the Venice community with an annual Mardi Gras parade on the boardwalk including a traditional brass band, funky drum corps, stilt walkers, dancers and costumed bead-throwing revelers. The band's debut cd, Funky Freedom, was released in 2007. According to CDBaby, "This collection of swampy funk is deep in the pocket, right where it should be. The grooves are thick, the vocals are sparse and always add texture to the interplay between the musicians, and the vibes never get bogged down...The Gumbo Brothers say they're 'going to hit you with some ass-shakin' funk!' They got that right. Prepare yourself." It was followed up in 2008 by The Gumbo Brothers On Fire, a collection of original Mardi Gras songs. In 2008, they were involved in the creation and release of The Gumbo Family Holiday Album - a collection of 14 holiday songs performed by 25 different musicians with all of the proceeds benefiting Students Run LA, which helps mentor at-risk youth to stay in school through goal setting and fitness programs. They are currently working hard on their next cd, Chicken Gumbo, a funky, instrumental mixture of original grooves. Dedicated to musicianship and exploring the traditions of funk, soul, jazz and r&b, The Gumbo Brothers have a wide appeal and an electrifying live show. Influences include: The Meters, Dr. John, War, Grant Green, Ivan “boogaloo” Joe Jones, James Brown, The Dirty Dozen, Galactic, and Walter “Wolfman” Washington. With several shows behind them including notable appearances at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco, The House of Blues in LA, and venues up and down the west coast, this Venice-based quartet is bringing their infectious, booty movin' bayou grooves to swamp-funk fans throughout the southland and beyond.
