Description: 2 Very Special Hours with Aloke Dutta!
ALOKE DUTTA is probably the only professional tabla player who plays tabla solo exclusively. Aloke grew up in Shantiniketan where Rabindranath Tagore created a rare blend of intellectual clarity and aesthetic sensibility. He was very fortunate to be able to receive his training in tabla under his father, Anadinath Dutta, as well as Shankar Ghosh, and Jnan Prakash Ghosh. These two streams have combined with his talent, careful thought, and intense practice to create a tabla player of exceptional accomplishment. Since 1990, Aloke has devoted himself exclusively to the development and promotion of pure tabla music, an art form that, he believes, is one of the most expressive and powerful in the world. Encompassing the complexity of traditional, classical Indian rhythms and contemporary ideas, his tabla music is unique and emotionally charged.
Organic Persian Greek: The band met one night through mutual friends in L.A. for a random late jam session. Our style of music is a flowing jam type of format. We don’t follow notes or written direction necessarily. As oppose to looking at music as some structured thing, we take it in more as circulating strings of consciousness. Our music has somewhat of a tribal-feel. The band name was made because that night, The Greeks had met The Persians. The original band members are Peter, Petros, Esfandiar, and Kaveh. There are two Persian and two Greek musicians. Our new band member, Tris Trum from New Jersey, plays amazing bass.
