Yes they are fierce - the kings of the jungle” – Jeremy Sole, KCRW Inspired by reggae, sound system culture and the myriad of musical styles influenced by Jamaican music old and new, The Lions’ sound is firmly placed in soul music. "All the guys in The Lions grew up on classic Jamaican records so since we began we have wanted to give our records that same edge and roughness that we grew up hearing on LPs by The Upsetters, Soul Syndicate, The Rockers Band and Roots Radics. The rhythm section was all recorded to tape, the Hammond buzzed a little, fuses blew and good mistakes were left in. We basically made the dusty reggae soul LP WE have been wanting to hear for years." – Dan Ubick (producer) The band draws together a dozen or so of LA’s elite reggae and soul forerunners who loosely coalesced as The Lions in 2007. Members of the legendary ska band Hepcat, Deston Berry and Alex Désert, form half of the vocal team, and the latter also has a successful career on screen, including roles in the films Swingers and High Fidelity. The other half is the sweet falsetto of Malik Moore and DJ stylings of Black Shakespeare, the charismatic cousin of Robbie Shakespeare (of Sly & Robbie fame) and co-runner of the i&i Sound System, a customised ice cream van bringing bass to the streets of the west coast and featured on the cover of both Saul Williams’ self-titled album and an issue of XLR8R Magazine. Other members include guitarist Dan Ubick, formerly of Breakestra, Macy Gray co-writer and collaborator Dave Wilder on bass, plus musicians who have played with the likes of De La Soul, Barrington Levy, Beck, Raphael Saadiq, Big Daddy Kane and Black Eyed Peas.
Dirty Rice: Dirty Rice's journey began in March of 2010 in South Oxnard, CA with the intention of only playing one gig for the birthday's of two of the band mates (Mataio and Maualuga Valoaga). Since then, DR has been blessed to continue due to the positive responses from family, friends and a building fan base. Over the past year, Dirty Rice has had the honor and opportunity to play with headline acts such as Rey Fresco, JBoog, Iration, and reggae legends Pato Banton and Don Carlos and have played for audiences of intimate crowds to sold out shows at Ventura Theater with more over 1500 attendees. Dirty Rice consists of: Henry Otineru (guitar/vocals), Shirley Moore (vocals), Nasau Galeia (guitar/vocals), Mau Valoaga (lead guitar), Charleen Morla (keyboards), Mataio Valoaga (bass), Pika Maiva (drums).
Jefsetter : Jefsetter is an original rock/funk band, based in Los Angeles, California. It features Jef Scott (Tori Amos, The Men, Company Of Strangers, The Ghostwriters) on guitar and vocals, Gianni Gibson (Them Howling Bones, Vinnie Ferra), on drums and Damon DeGrignon (Gary Glitter, Big Daddy, The Ghostwriters), on bass. The band performs material from Jef’s previous projects, The Men (Universal), Australia’s Company of Strangers (Sony), The Ghostwriters (Pilot) and brand new Jefsetter songs. They are presently recording their debut album.
The Expanders: The Expanders began playing reggae music together in the summer of 2003, and today are one of the most respected and hardest working reggae bands in Southern California. They have come to be known for their vintage “rockers” style of reggae, played in the tradition of classic 1970s Jamaican groups like The Ethiopians, Culture, The Mighty Diamonds, etc. Their music emphasizes three-part vocal harmonies and strong song writing. In addition to performing their own original material and rare Jamaican scorchers, since 2006 The Expanders have been the backing band of choice for legendary Jamaican singers when they come to California to perform, having backed such classic artists as Alton Ellis, The Maytones, The Ethiopians, The Wailing Souls, and many more.
