Bernie Worrell Orchestra
Bernie Worrell: How many artists can say they were in on the ground floor of an honest-to-Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame supergroup, all while inventing a completely original and uncanny sound and, in the ensuing years, building a legendary reputation as one of the most versatile hired guns in the music business? True funkateers know the history. From the fat Minimoog bass lines of “Flash Light” and “One Nation Under A Groove” to the percussive piano runs of “Chocolate City” and “Give Up the Funk,” Bernie Worrell is synonymous with the legacy of Parliament-Funkadelic; in fact, he’s one of the originators of the psychedelic funk sound, having written and co-produced the lion’s share of the music going back to Funkadelic’s formative years, with an eclectic ear for everything from Chopin to the Chi-Lites.
These days the terms “living legend” or “funk icon” really don’t come close to doing him justice. “Funk iconoclast” is probably more apt, considering the breadth of Worrell’s contributions to seminal albums outside the P-Funk canon—including Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense and Public Image Ltd’s Album, to name two of the more monolithic examples. Keith Richards, Yoko Ono, Bootsy Collins, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Mos Def, Sly & Robbie, Deee-Lite, Bill Laswell and many more have recruited him in the studio and on tour—all for his versatility, vision and feverish creativity whenever he gets his hands on a keyboard.
June, 2011 saw the release of "Bernie Worrell: Standards", Bernie's take on jazz standards. Precipitating the decision by Worrell and co-producer, Evan Taylor to "take the show on the road". The Bernie Worrell Orchestra is a nine-piece band consisting of two guitarists, a drummer, bass, percussion and a three-piece horn section which performs songs from Bernie's vast repertoire, including his most recent original songs. The enthusiastic response from fellow musicians has led to guest appearances by the likes of Bootsy Collins, Mike Watt, Money Mark, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Gary Lucas in addition to a vast variety of notable artists.
Worrell will be soon be entering the studio with the Bernie Worrell Orchestra to record their debut album, planned for release in March 2013.
Since 2010, NVO has been rocking the scene with a steady assault of guitar, bass, drums, synthesizers and whatever else they find to channel the funk. The group takes an organic path to groove creation, always dissecting and reconstructing their sounds with the freshest tech. The resulting fusion of bass-heavy rock, sci-fi funk and rave-hop epitomizes the NVO sound as they blast you into space – featuring producer/guitarist Mike Laglia, drummer Greg Maximov, DJ Chuck Jones, and recent addition vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Charles Darius.
NVO’s forthcoming EP is a turning point for the group, moving from purely instrumental compositions to lyrically focused songs, and features collaborations with Lateef the Truthspeaker and Eko Zu. Their previous Mallabel Music release “Night Vision Odyssey” rapidly rose up the October 2015 Beatport charts, ranking in the top 10 for Electro House releases, top 10 for Chillout releases, top 25 for House releases, and top 25 for Electronica releases. “Night Vision Odyssey” showcases a gamut of midtempo grooves, cinematic headnodders, and dancefloor destroyers— recorded in part at Oakland’s Zoo Labs as part of the revolutionary “Zoo Labs Music Residency” accelerator program in 2015. The group has 4 EPs and 1 LP to date, and a recent official remix for Mochipet. Their music has been featured in the Hulu show “Resident Advisors” and at the SF Giant’s stadium.
The group has serious video chops (having produced and directed music videos for many other artists) and the music video for 2014 single “Astral Revelation” is currently in rotation on television across 4 continents. Their signature live performances include custom-built visuals and projection mapping, ensuring that late-night dance devotees leave sweaty and satisfied.
NVO has provided support for a veritable “who’s who” of live electronica, including Goldfish, The New Deal, Lotus, and Conspirator. They’ve shared a stage with other notable acts like Mark Farina, Sidecar Tommy (Beats Antique), JPOD, Gladkill, Fort Knox Five, and Bernie Worrell (of P-Funk and the Talking Heads). Breakout performances at festivals like Gem and Jam, High Sierra, and Burning Man have secured NVO as ‘can’t miss’ late night act.
