    Can't punk rockers be delicate?
    Can't soul artists be atheists?
Can't elegant ladies belt into a microphone?
"I bet they fucking can," argued Fabrice Ferrer, the French musician and composer behind Los Angeles–based soul/rock band Newton and the Fates. Ferrer didn’t want to choose between Aretha Franklin and The White Stripes, or between Otis Redding and The Bronx, or even between The Supremes and Janis Joplin. In fact, he envisioned an innovative musical project that would seamlessly fuse all of those influences.
What he had in mind: The Ronettes on cocaine, singing the skeptic gospel.
Ferrer first met Briana O’Connor, a powerful singer from Detroit who learned how to sing in a church. The two started building a repertoire of original songs, and after a few months of work, calls, Craigslist posts, and existential questioning, the band was complete.
Inna Zolotykh (a pop singer from Russia) and Elizabeth Lake (well... Elizabeth Williams recorded back ups on the EP but then quit the band #sad, only to be replaced with Lake #goodnews #confusingforthebio) completed the fronting trio.
Then Mike Christie —ex–Das Klown (Skunk Records), ex–Duane Peters Gunfight (Indian  Recordings), ex–The UV’s (a punk band in which he met Ferrer), ex–tons of other rock and punk bands— joined them on bass. Brant J. Cole, Dallas native and proud son of Brian Cole from The Association, joined on drums. And last but not least, the band added keyboard player Bastien Benkhelil, a French musician artist who works as a sound designer for Stella McCartney and David LaChapelle.
After playing some successful shows around Los Angeles, Newton and the Fates recorded their debut EP, Atomic Soul, at EastWest Studios.
