    Atash

A rare combination of master musicians hailing from Iran, India, Guinea, Mexico, Cuba, and the U.S., ATASH has taken the term “world music” to the next level.  Original music steeped in an array of traditional sounds, ATASH combines a driving drum and percussion section with upright bass, violins, sitar, and flamenco guitar, topped off by the powerful vocals of Persian singer, Mohammad Firoozi.  Compared to everything from the Gypsy Kings, to Fela Kuti, to Bollywood music - Atash is hard to pin down, yet consistently one thing - mesmerizing. On an unending journey of international collaboration, ATASH has traveled the world for nearly two decades, playing elaborate theater shows, keeping the dance floors packed at clubs, and teaching lessons and workshops to children and adults across the US, Mexico, Europe, and the Far East. "

    Zal Top

Jazz drummer Saliou ( Zal) Top was born and raised in Dakar, Senegal. During his high school years, he spent his free time listening to soul, pop, rock, funk, as well as popular African music from the 1970s. In 1997, he began to study drumming formally with his friend and mentor Vieux Keita, percussionist with the National Senegalese Orchestra. During this time Zal was strongly influenced by the innovative, rhythmic fusions of Super Diamono de Dakar, the famous Senegalese Afro-funk group from the 1980s. In 1998, a friend introduced Zal to the Senegalese jazz drummer Serge Michel Huchard. Under Huchard’s and Pape Dieng's (Dienguos) guidance, Zal perfected his drumming technique and expanded his repertoire to include a broad range of jazz and other musical styles. In 2001, after having freelanced with several groups in Dakar, Zal formed his first group, The Booki Band, which interpreted compositions of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, etc., throughout Dakar’s jazz clubs for several years. In 2004 Zal joined Cameroonian trumpeter Roger Onguolo’s group, Okola. In 2006, along with friend and pianist Arona Pouye, Zal formed the group Karaiba. He drummed and composed with the latter group for three years. In 2010 Zal launched his solo career and founded his newest group, the Zal Top Project, which features some of the best jazz talent from both the US and Dakar. The group blends jazz, blues, Afro-beat, funk, and Latin jazz into a true multicultural fusion, a symbiosis of modern grooves and African melodies. The Zal Top Project toured Senegal in November 2010 With the Devin Phillips Quartet under the auspices of the United States Embassy of Dakar. Portions of the tour, including a performance at the Dakar Jazz Festival, were filmed for a promotional DVD. The group’s first CD, “CONVICTION” will be released in 2012.
