Go big. Go against the norm. Go against those who hate you. Dream bigger than what anyone says you could do. And when no one believes in you, write down those words, vow to sing them to the world and never give up on that dream. Born Khalid Jefferson in Los Angeles’ Leimert Park, the center of the city’s African-American arts scene, Slim Jeff grew up heavily influenced by hip-hop, soul, and oldies. Throughout his childhood Slim Jeff proved himself to be a gifted athlete, but after the loss of his mother and father, he began channeling his life experiences into his music. “As a kid growing up in South Central Los Angeles, sports was my escape, but after my mom passed music became a way for me to tap into reality. I started to find gratification in expressing my feelings with lyrics. Suddenly everything had meaning to me.” Inspired by music legends like Jay-Z, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Evelyn Champagne King, Al Green, James Brown, Kanye West, The Beatles and 2Pac, Slim Jeff developed his own style of rap, exhibiting a rare combination of witty punch lines and thoughtful content on top of grooves made for the Billboard charts. In early 2011, he connected with up and coming producer Miles Davis (of LPMD) to produce “Short People.” Already generating buzz around the LA music scene, the song is inspired by and includes samples from Randy Newman’s controversial song of the same name that was released in 1978 to opposition from local government in Maryland. In 2012, Slim Jeff will release his debut mixtape, “High Society,” featuring his reinvention of some of the hottest songs that have changed the music world. Slim Jeff is also expected to debut the EP “Rise & Shine,” which will feature a new version of “Short People” as well as 2 other tracks. Slim Jeff is also hard at work in the studio working on his full-length debut album “No Labels,” slated to drop later this year. “People can expect a change of direction in hip-hop. I’m making music I believe in. It won’t sound like anything on the market.”
